First climbing stand I owned was kind'a like that, except the platform was wood. It was a Baker brand. Back in the 70's I climbed may trees with it, I also burned my way back down several of them when it slipped and was left hanging by the top part more than once when the foot part came off during the climb and went to the ground by itself.

This one has always worked really well,I used it this last hunting season. Its lightweight and kinda nostalgic, helped kill a lotta deer.
Its a good idea to keep extra bolts and nuts in your pouch,Or you could be SOL!! |

That looks like a homemade Amacker. I used to have one just like it a friend with a metal shop made me. I used it for years. They worked great. As a matter of fact, it is still hanging in a tree near Chidester, AR, or was this fall when I walked past it. I was hoping someone would steal the heavy SOB.
Sam mentioned the old Baker stands. Those were the first climbers (1976) and were the most uncomfortable, dangerous inventions ever conceived. When they first came out they didn't even have the hand climber attachment, just the seat. You were supposed to hug the tree & shinney up. If you ever stood close to where the wood board frame bit the tree, you were in mortal danger. BUT they only cost $19.99. |

I gave away a stand like that last year. I got a good buy on an aluminum climber so I gave that heavy sucker away. A few years ago a guy offered to give me one of those Baker climbing stands. I said "no thanks".

It only happened once. After that, I always carried extra wing nuts and bolts in my fanny pack.

I've got 3 like that. Dont really use much anymore just sometimes in a place to leave where Im afraid someone might steal my Summitt. Im getting too old to carry those heavy suckers around too far!

Yep Huntindoc, back in the day you could tell at a glance who was using a Baker climbing treestand.
They didn't have any buttons left on the front of their shirts and jackets.

I use a 20 year old climber everytime I go out. Works great but sure is noisy. Would buy a new one but it was free and I am cheap.

I learned to bow hunt off one of those. And only weighing 60-75 pounds at the time i learned to stand real still on the very end of the plat form when climbing a slick oak.
It only took one trip sliding down that tree to figure it out. Dad at the bottom of the tree laughing is azz off when he seen the look on my face when i got to the bottom |

I remember the Baker's too---and the wingnut problem with several stands. When the Baker first came out, I decided it would be easy to build one of those, so I did--even the hand climber/seat part. Sounded like a fine idea. Took it to Wattensaw for it's maiden climb. Got up the tree, sat down, and the bottom fell to the ground. I don't remember for sure how I got back down, but I do know that when I did, I took the stand off the tree and threw the whole thing into the creek!

Looks exactly like the ones I used to make.....mine though, were made of steel, and were pretty heavy.

I bought one of the original Baker stands which was actually first called a Profane Tree Stand. It was called that by the guy who invented it in his garage and his friends would see it and say, "isn't that the damnest thing". Tree stand history for the day!

My dad and I got 2 of the Amackers back in late 70s or early 80's. One has been left out in the woods for several years and is still structurally good. Replaced bolts and nuts a couple years ago.
